Ruby on Rails on Mac OS X Tutorial

March 1st, 2006

The Ruby on Rails web application framework continues to catch more and more interest. Many improvements and added features in the recently-released Ruby on Rails 1.0 gave the community another boost.

Now Apple released an article which explains how to develop Ruby on Rais applications under Mac OS X. The even concentrates on using Textmate:

It should come as no surprise that Mac OS X is a favored platform for Rails development. Rails and its supporting cast of web servers and databases thrive on the rich Mac OS X environment. The premier text editor favored by legions of Rails programmers everywhere is TextMate, a Cocoa application. And all members of the Rails core development team work with Macs.

I’ve read several Rails tutorials (and even completed some of them), and this one has much in common with the other ones available: it concentrates on creating a simple application, it tries to explain the basic ideas behind RoR. One good thing is that this article also introduces methods like ‘belongs to’, ‘has many’ or business logic, which are things not all Ruby on Rails beginner tutorials try to explain.

Illustration, from sketch to finish - Part One

January 3rd, 2006

Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is one of those Applications many people use, but hardly really use. People often just use it to do basic vector editing, and some aren’t even capable of doing just that - as Illustrator is quite different compared to Photoshop but the partly similar Interface suggests otherwise

Veerle wrote/recorded a tutorial which explains how to use the pen tool in illustrator and how bezier curves work.

December 26th, 2005

At first I wasn’t sure whether to blog this or not, but judging by the lack of time I could invest into this site lately any posting ain’t a bad posting.
So take it as something mainly interesting for those which have little experience in creating templatees

This devlobby.com tutorial explains in detail how to create a simply web layout in photoshop, mind it’s garned with Windows screenshots but hey, there’s little difference between Photoshop on Mac and Windows

CSS 2.1 selectors

November 25th, 2005

CSS 2.1 selectors offer a lot of functionality which allow to create clutter-free html by getting rid of all these .class and #id tags we currently often apply to every 2nd element
There’s a lack of support especially in the various incarnations of Internet Explorer so far, but most other modern browsers geht it right, so learning about using these selectors seems to be a worthfull idea.

And apart from that: on the one hand there’re some Javascript extensions which teach Internet Explorer to “understand” these selectors, and on the other hand is IE7 on the horizon too.

Mac DVD Backup Tutorial

November 22nd, 2005

There’s quite a bunch of Windows applications which aid you in backing up or ripping DVD’s. The Mac market on the other hand is a tad more dim. Mark Pilgrim has a nice tutorial (including videos) which explain how to backup DVD’s on your mac.

Enhance your Websites accesibility

October 29th, 2005

Stopdesign has a nice tutorial on how to enhance web accesibility using Zoom layout techniques. I always hate it when webpages utilize ultra-small font-sizes; that is so 90ties and I’m happy that these days of 11px verdana fonts on designer pages seem to pass. The first thing I do when visiting one of those small-font sites is hammering apple-+ repeatedly, fucking up their layout and making it well-suited for my eyes (which got quite injured over the last 15 years of using computers).
So I encourage everyone to take a look at stopdesign’s nice tutorial :) Your readers eyes’ll thank you.
