December 26th, 2005 in Adobe, Tutorials, Web Development |

At first I wasn’t sure whether to blog this or not, but judging by the lack of time I could invest into this site lately any posting ain’t a bad posting.
So take it as something mainly interesting for those which have little experience in creating templatees

This devlobby.com tutorial explains in detail how to create a simply web layout in photoshop, mind it’s garned with Windows screenshots but hey, there’s little difference between Photoshop on Mac and Windows

Font management solution from Linotype

December 21st, 2005 in Mac Apps |

Yeah, I know, there’s Font Book in Mac OS X to accomplish just that task and for those who want more there’s the commercial Suitcase by extensis. However, many people feel that their demands on a Font Management Solution are somewhere between those two. This is where the new free Linotype FontExplorer X comes into play. It offers a nice set of features and includes an iTunes-like shop which allows you to easily buy fonts.

A great bunch of Quicksilver tips

December 21st, 2005 in Application Tips, Mac Apps |

Veerle asked his fellow readership for submissions of tips on how to use Quicksilver. I found it sometimes a bit difficult to rework the way I think so I could use Quicksilver for accomplishing awesome stuff. Some tasks are burned so deep into my mind that it feels difficult to adhere to new ways of accomplishing them.
So these tips were a real goldmine for me. I’ll try to use Quicksilver way more often now.

Understanding Xcode

December 21st, 2005 in Application Tips |

Sure, Xcode is not the standard designers tool, but it might happen that you need to tweak an open source app, or that you want to build a frontend for one of your scripts. Either way, Xcode can be quite confusing, it took me some time to understand how to use it (I think it’s especially bad if ones comes from the VisualStudio background as things are really different there). OSNews lists some worthwhile Apple tutorials on Xcode, it’s a good read if you’re interested in this topic.

Google Talk for Mac OS X soon. (Almost)

December 17th, 2005 in Events, Mac Apps |

Google Talk
There has been a lot of buzz about Google Talk, the Google IM Service, and there has been a lot of fuzz about Google Talk not supporting anything apart of Windows if it comes to it’s most interesting feature, the *actual* talking. The client is only available for Windows, and although it uses the jabber protocol and thus allows us Mac users to at least connect to the network using other clients, the lack of the talk-feature is imminent.
Enter GAIM 2.0

GAIM is a cross-plattform Instant Messaging Library which has made it into a lot of popular IM Applications like for example Adium. Just recently Google hired the GAIM-Author, Sean, and he just wrote a bit about the upcoming GAIM 2.0:
We’ve shifted all our efforts to finishing Gaim 2.0.0. Gaim 2.0.0 has a ton of great features, fixes every problem you’ve ever had with Gaim, makes drastic changes to huge parts of Gaim—especially status, includes three new protocols, and does a bunch of other amazing stuff. We’re looking to feature freeze at the end of this month and release a month or so later, so be sure to get on our cases and make sure we get it finished.

And here comes the interesting part:
On a related note, the gaim-vv project—which aimed to offer a framework for voice and video support in Gaim—is being merged back into Gaim proper for hopeful incorporation into Gaim 2.0.0. This will be used to support Google Talk’s voice as well as MSN and Yahoo! webcams.

Google Talk coming to your local GAIM Messenger, only a matter of time until Adium supports it; especially now that Google released the source-code and API for the voice part of Google talk
