Free Icons

December 31st, 2005 in Design Ressources |

FamFamFam (great name, honestly) released a set of icons which one can use in his projects for free. They’re very colorfull and feel a tad like candy KDE icons; I like them, and the price is perfect. Maybe just what you need to enhance that webshop you’ve been working on.

Making a better iCal

December 31st, 2005 in Application Tips, Workflow |

If there’s one thing which I don’t like about iCal (well there’re actually 2 things, but I’ll only talk about one of those now) then it’s that newly created events don’t contain an alarm. On the one hand it’s tedious task to select 10 new events by hand and set an alarm for each of them, and on the other I frequently even forget that and thus accordingly forget the actual event as iCal never informs me

Now Robert Blum wrote a small iCal Fix which adresses just this issue: Newly created events now automatically haven an alarm set.
Great.

Best codec for Screen capture content (benchmark)

December 31st, 2005 in Web Development |

Here’s a pretty interesting overview which covers and compares the following web streaming formats:

  • TSCC
  • Flash FLV (VP6)
  • Flash FLV (SSP)
  • Quicktime MOV (H264)
  • Quicktime MOV (SV3P)
  • Windows Media Player (WMV9)
  • Windows Media Player (WMV9S)
  • The comparison contains examples as well as detailed information about the overall quality and performance of the codec.

Although the article specializes on using the tested codecs for screen capturing, it still encloses much information which can also be used when trying to find the right codec for other streaming and or video tasks.

    Camino 1.02b

    December 30th, 2005 in Mac Apps |

Camino, the other Gecko-powered browser for Mac OS X, has been updated to version 1.02b.

Personally, I prefer Camino over Firefox on OSX as it feels more integrated (which it actually is). Though I still use Firefox alot since there’re so many usefull extensions – especially for WebDevelopers – which don’t work in Camino at all.

Camino – Mozilla power, Mac style.
